East Midlands Teacher Training Partnership

Secondary Modern Foreign Languages

Modern Foreign Languages are truly exciting subjects to teach in today’s multicultural world. They are as much about culture and understanding as they are about grammar and pronunciation, because of their potential to open up young eyes and minds to the wider world.

An MFL teacher needs a strong classroom presence, a talent for creativity and an ability to instil confidence in students who may be reluctant to express themselves in a language which is not their own.

Our course is particularly well suited to helping trainee teachers make a real connection with students because of the focus on comprehension, written and verbal communication. We build on the excitement generated through their early introduction to French at primary school.

We offer trainees the opportunity to develop their classroom management skills, lesson construction, planning (short, medium and long term) and professional versatility. The latter is reflected in the fact that we teach 3 different languages across the full range of ages and abilities. Trainees will have the chance to gain experience across these ranges and will be fully supported throughout.

Trainees will normally specialise in one modern foreign language across the 11-16 range, but the ability to deliver 2 languages is preferable. The preferences will be identified during the recruitment process and selected from the following options:

  • French
  • German
  • Spanish

It is inevitable that some aspects of the subject will require further development in skills and knowledge but that will be addressed as part of the training plan throughout the year.
